10 Days Left: Making Plans and Smashing the To-Do List!

“You’re getting there, Elizabeth,” I say to myself. “You’re getting there.”

I stare at the ceiling of my cabin, not wanting to move. I’m far too comfortable, but feel incredibly lazy as it’s already past 9am. I was up until 1am last night working on illustrations, the website, emails and working on a graphic design project. I drag myself out of bed and head straight to work, sorting out our to-do list, and continuing with laptop duties.

Laura has gone for some time out with her mother to a lovely hotel where they can spend time with each other and go swimming in the pool. I found it strange waking up without her. Realising that there was a silence on the boat where Laura filled it with conversation and singing.

Even Leela seemed a bit miserable without her, lying on the floor in the bathroom, staring at me in accusation.

“Another person gone,” her eyes seemed to say.

There was no way to explain that Laura would be back. And there was no way to explain that she was about to go on the biggest journey of her life to England in just 10 days.

10 days left on Papageno. How bazaar.

I spoke to Edouard yesterday. It had been a couple of days since we last spoke. We usually ask how each other is doing, how our lives are, how Leela is doing and what’s going on with the boat.

“I worry about you Lizzie,” Edouard said. “I can relax when you get to England because I’ll know you’re safe.”

I smiled at that. And then cried because I missed him so much and I knew how happy he was in France without the boat.

“I’m so happy for you,” I said, not feeling very happy but glad for him nonetheless.

However, despite the sadness and the hardship of our separation, I know the path is right for us at this moment in time to grow as separate people. I feel like in the beginning I was an acorn and now I’m some kind of wizened oak, bent and gnarled in the spine with clenched hands.

But the mission is still clear. Carry on carrying on.

My to do list has gotten smaller. I went to the marina to beg to stay longer. They said to ask the docksman on the day I was supposed to get kicked off and ask him, and that it shouldn’t be a problem.

Alrighty then.

I’ve checked out the coolant pipe and it seems sound. No worries there.

The only thing I have to do engine wise is get the correct transmission fluid. The vet is sorted- booked an appointment for the 13th to get Leela’s latest shot. I’ve got some friends who will help me move the boat when the time comes. I’m actually hoping to hold out at the marina until the rigging workshop decide they want to work on her and bring her over themselves. I know my surroundings here, I know the people here and that’s a huge comfort whilst being here solo.

But right now, I’m finding a bit of extra happiness as each day goes by.

I’m looking forwards and am even taking a silversmithing workshop when I go home. I decided to explore all of the things that I never did but wanted to. I’ll be taking a ceramics class, weaving, silversmithing, life drawing- all of these things I took sincere joy in in the past but never pursued. Well, I have the time now. I want to fill my heart with as many creative, positive and happy things as possible. I want to work on my shop and my books. I have a few very precious months to restore my spirit in England with Leela and I intend on taking advantage of them. It’s also to go towards my shop, to expand and to continue to create art through jewellery, prints and clothing to share with everyone. I’ve always wanted to work for myself and here I am. I’m just honoured that people enjoy my illustrations.

It’s what makes me happy.

Papageno and us all have come a long way. I still intend to film when I’m in England with Leela. We’re going to explore so many places together and I can’t wait to show you what I love about my homeland. It’s been wonderful knowing I’m going home too, mostly because I’m able to say yes to invites now! Laura and I have been making many plans with our dogs and I’m content to get swept up in it all to repair some of the hurt.

I’ll continue editing, writing and creating and raising money to carry on with Papageno. As I check my emails, I’ve just learned that my rigging date has been put off. They can’t do it until I am out of the country. It’s a shame but they’ve promised to capture some footage for me.

They’re a good team and I know they’ll do the best job they can. It’s been great talking to them on a regular basis. We walk Leela past their workshop all the time so when we catch the boss there, we manage to sit in his air conditioned office and talk about the project more.

Turns out when he was young he bought a sailboat not knowing anything about sailing and went across the world with it. When we told him about keeping her as original as possible, about our journey, about bringing her back from the dead and making her a restoration project, his eyes seemed to sparkle with the challenge.

“You’re like me when I was young,” he said to me with a laugh. “You have the same look in your eye!”

I smiled.

It was determination.

It was determination to see this through. And we will. We have raised £5850 towards her restoration, just shy of the £7000 target. What an incredible turn around. This time last week I was ready to through myself into the black depths of the murky ocean around the docks. When Kickstarter had taken down our campaign, I thought it was all over.

But screw that.

It’s only over when we say it is.

And “it’s over” it’s not in the Papageno Clan’s vocabulary.

“A Wonderful Disastor.”

It’s 6:11am in the morning and I have just said goodbye to Edouard.

“I don’t want it to be goodbye,” I say into his collar. “I want it to be see you later.”

He laughs quietly in my shoulder. “Yes of course Lizzie.”

I hung onto him tightly in the dark, trying to make time stand still so no moment would pass into the future. If I held strong enough, maybe this wouldn’t happen. Maybe I could just feel this embrace forever.

“See you, Lizzie.”

He gets into his car, his possessions packed in the back and I’m reminded of how it was the both of us stealing away in the early morning last year for Marseille. How it had been a fresh start for the both of us.

He opens the door to his car and we could and give each other one last kiss.

“I love you.” I try to smile, wanting it to be easier for him and stay upbeat. “Have a wonderful time!”

He smiles back and then finally…

Finally…

Drives away.

I stare after the lights of his car in the dark, my chest suddenly wrenching open, my lungs unable to take in the air as smooth as they used to. Suddenly I’m breathing in jagged breaths, my spine clenching and unclenching as sobs wrack my body.

I try to keep them inside myself, not wanting to wake anyone up in the house, not wanting to startle the cat, but at the same time wanting to pour all of my anguish into one black river before me so I don’t have to feel it anymore.

I know Edouard’s mother is in the kitchen. I don’t want to stay outside too long in case she comes out and comforts me. I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.

I walk into the house, finish making my cup of tea and turn to his mother.

“I think I will go for a little sleep,” I say in very broken French (I won’t even attempt to write it.)

Knowing that this may be the last time I see her as well (she goes to work very early) I pretend as though it isn’t and I’m simply going back to bed. But as I hug her, a small shuddering starts to wrack my ribs again as I try and hold in my tears.

She gives me a sad smile as I release her, pick up my tea and return to Edouard’s bedroom.

His red lamp covers the room in a cosy glow of safety. I could stay here forever. I imagine doing just that, waiting for him to come back. It wouldn’t be so bad. It was warm, the bed is comfortable and here I feel utterly safe.

But I catch my plane today and this may or ay not be the last time I am ever within these four walls. I want to leave something for him for when he comes back, some note or something for him to pick up and smile, remembering me. But I’m too exhausted, and as I look round, there are reminders of our life together everywhere. The necklace I made him. It had fallen off from around his neck in Guadeloupe at anchorage, just after our conversation about him needing to go home.

I was so scared that it was a sign, that upon seeing it within the depths, I dived down, lungs burning, arms reaching, straining to grab it from beneath the bed, feeling the excruciating pain explode in both my eardrums three metres from the bottom. I swam on, harder, faster and I finally grabbed it and swam up to the service, crying out to God, Jesus, Neptune and every other divinity I could think of as the agony throbbed inside my head.

There’s my ink drawing of Delos that I did for an episode of Brady’s when someone had attempted to steal their dingy. I had given it to Edouard on the day I knew he was leaving Ascension Island. We had said our goodbyes, and I had asked Brian to take me back on Maggie so I could give him the drawing with a note and a bottle of wine.

It must have sealed the deal because three weeks later he was asking me to live with him in Paris.

“I’m sure we have to do something together even if we are heading straight for disaster. Because in the worst case it will be a wonderful disaster.”

I don’t know about disaster, but it certainly has been wonderful.

I don’t know what will happen in the future. I can try, hope and orchestrate all I want. But I want it to be natural. If Edouard and I are meant for each other, I want our paths to come together because it’s something we both want in our lives.

I went to bed last night thinking about Papageno. It used to make me sad to think of all the work I must do, but for some reason, last night I was getting excited. Talking about her rig, boat storage, imagining coming back in the new year with a crew who had expertise in some areas, working on her and improving her as we travel to a different place over the course of a month maybe two. Short sails so I still get to return to Europe for a rest. Take crew for seasons so I can learn in segments, rather than taking it all at once and breaking after six months (which is what happened to me and Edouard.) I thought about painting her floor, finding mattresses, I thought about the offer I had from Precision Sails to have her sails made for her, wondering if I could have my logo. Thinking about design I did for Papageno and feeling that pride in her, to how I felt when it all crumbled around my ears.

But now, I was potentially giving her a second chance.

looking out

I started a Kickstarter last night, for £3000 to cover her mast/rigging expenses to give her a second chance at life. To give the go ahead to the workshop where her broken masts have been waiting for three weeks. I pulled the plug on all progress since I learned Edouard wasn’t coming back. I couldn’t bear the idea of continuing without him. Didn’t know how I could do it.

But it became apparent quickly, that maybe people wouldn’t love her as much as me. Maybe people wouldn’t see the same potential. Maybe they would only see the difficulties and not the opportunities. Maybe the wiring and the tyres as fenders (hey, they’re free, aren’t they?) would scare potential buyers off.

If I couldn’t get what she was worth, what if I just kept her? Completed the project? Maybe after a few months of Edouard and I being apart, I would feel better? Renewed?

So, the Kickstarter project came into being. I had nothing left to lose.

£600 for the masts.

£1500 to have the cable and fittings created.

£900 to cover installation and boat yard fees (complete estimate on my part.)

I created “Save Papageno!” and connected any pledge with a reward from my shop for the same value.

After saying my goodbyes to Edouard, I lay on his bed and checked my emails and casually logged into Kickstarter.

My plan was to return to Martinique, clean her up as best as I could and either anchor her up or leave her in the storage yard. I know in my heart I need to return to England as soon as possible. I’m completely empty and need a rest. But to have her masts repaired before returning would be a huge achievement. Her rig installed would be an even bigger one.

And if I only have enough for her masts and not for the entire rig, I could return to Blighty and save up the rest over December. I could return in January and give the workshop the go-ahead.

“Yes, please, I’ll have a new rig for Papageno, you beautiful beasts!”

After seeing an email from Kickstarter, I clicked on it and logged into my project account.

I found that overnight we had sold £720 worth of stock from my shop to go towards Papageno’s repair.

And whilst I was trying to stifle the tears, it helped me wipe them from my cheeks.

Maybe the impossible was possible after all.

I looked around Edouard’s bedroom, feeling the safety, love and warmth in the room. I had been given an opportunity to walk my own path. I had been given an opportunity to grow and strengthen, to make me a better person. A stronger person.

And if me and Edouard ever find each other again, I don’t want to be the little English girl trying to cry quietly in the dark.

I want to be all I can be. And I want that for him as well. Happiness. Strength. A sense of direction. Purpose. So, if the day comes where we started from “Level 0” as we’ve been calling it, we’re going to be the best we can be for each other.

I hope we find each other again.

“Even if we are heading straight for disaster. Because in the worst case it will be a wonderful disaster.”

Thank you, Edouard for your love.

Papageno’s Captain Log: Part 1 “Keep it together!”

It’s been a long time. Far too long in fact. I can feel my bones shift into position as I take a heavier weight each day. But I knew this would happen. I knew that it would have to be like this.

Keep it together, Liz, keep it together.

I feel a calm resignation every day. I don’t even panic anymore. There have been so many set backs, cancellations and delays with Papageno that I’ve learned to take it all in my stride. Or maybe it’s not even taking it in my stride. Maybe I’ve just accepted it is the way it is, or maybe Papageno has just beaten me.

I don’t know. And I suppose it doesn’t matter as long as I carry on.

There’s a strange responsibility being a captain who shouldn’t be captain. I see the surprise on people’s faces when they ask who’s in charge of Papageno and they see my hand raised.

“Haha, yeah, but really?”

“No, I really am the Captain.”

“Oh… that’s nice!”

So nice. So nice in fact that I feel like my spine is turning to chalk each day as I get up and face another day of heat, another day of organisation, another day of trying to keep it all up and rolling for my crew who I desperately love.

I have dreams, I have aspirations, and one of them is to get Papageno out there and doing what she wants to do.

My day so far:

7am: I wake up alone in the cabin because of the mosquitos. They eat Edouard alive, forcing him to sleep in the cockpit. There weren’t too many the previous night, but we were all hot. We were excited the previous night because we had just had all of our dirty laundry washed. We went to bed after a cold shower at the marina and collapsed into our freshly washed sheets. I’ve never been so thankful to find my clothes smelling clean and have them beautifully folded.

I stayed up to put the usual things away in the saloon. I’m always worried that Leela will jump on the table and devour everything in sight- I still haven’t gotten over how she ate our entire packet of bacon that we were so excited to have for breakfast the next morning. Because we have our washing, I don’t want Edouard to wake up to a mess. He’s already collapsed in the cockpit and is fast asleep, so I put everything away and make our bed, shutting the cupboard doors quickly in case the hiding mosquitos get out.

7:30am Laura makes us porridge with proper oats. We had some awful Quaker stuff the other week with mushed up oats- it doesn’t feel very English. Edouard isn’t sure how he feels about the entire “eating oats” thing, claiming it’s for horses, not people. But Laura and I are incredibly enthusiastic about it this morning so he goes for it anyway, whacking a load of jam into his bowl. Laura chooses peanut butter (bleugh) and I choose chia seeds and brown sugar.

It’s delicious.

11am Edouard goes off in the dingy with Leela to go swimming. It’s far too hot for her and she’s usually panting under the table. She’s in the playful biting stage at the moment and loves to jump at our toes when we’re least expecting it. She’s not pooping on the boat anywhere- which is a small kindness, but enjoys pooping on the dock in front of other people’s boats. Edouard has been asked to clear up after her, and after throwing a bucket of water to clean up, the poop washes inside a man’s fishing boat. After being forced to jump in and throw it out by hand, we’re all keeping a watchful eye on where she chooses to go to the toilet.

12:30am

Edouard and I go to get some supplies for lunch. The most important thing about keeping a crew together I’ve learned is keeping up morale- and that’s usually through our bellies. We’re incredibly happy if we’ve made a bowl of popcorn or have biscuits to dunk in our tea.

1:30pm Edouard makes us a salad with tomatoes, caramelised onions with a French mustard and balsamic dressing and cheese. I can barely eat all of mine because we ate a huge bag of crisps before as we were too hungry to wait. I think he doesn’t mind because he usually gets to eat my scraps.

4pm We all take a moment to relax. I go to my room for a lie down with my book whilst Edouard teaches Laura about map reading. I’ve been reading about The Great War recently and just finished The Forgotten Voices of the Somme. I devoured it and I’m now reading The Forgotten Voices of the Great War. It’s an account from soldiers from both sides, German, French and English and what they witnessed and felt. It’s been hugely humbling, and I tell myself everyday when I find it hard that I have nothing to complain about. I’m not a seventeen year old boy standing in a trench waiting to be told to go over and get shot down. I have all of my limbs, my health, I have water, food and I’m safe. I’m not at war. I should be grateful. And so, when I lie back and have their accounts echoing in my head, I feel relief coursing through me.

5pm I’m here in the office at the marina, trying to charge up our equipment. We’ve been forced to stop our usual pace of speed recently as we wait for a new head gasket for Papageno. I’m not sure how much it’s going to be or how much the mechanic is going to be, so I’m making sure to raise funds by doing something that gives me peace- painting.

And that is my day so far. I’m looking forward to going back to the boat and getting out my watercolours and I know Edouard is keen for me to do that as well. It’s been hard over the past few months and I barely recognise myself. But I’ve reached the big 30 now and I’m determined to carry on with renewed enthusiasm and vigour. My crew relies on me. I didn’t realise how heavy that would feel. To always be able to keep it together to not affect anyone. I want a happy and safe crew. I want everyone to have a positive experience out of this.

But at the moment I know it’s been difficult. It’s been hard, but we’re all trying. We’ll be leaving St Kitts soon and will be heading to Monserrat and then Guadeloupe for a week. After that? Martinique for the serious repairs. Not to mention my parents are coming over to see me in September in St Lucia.

So, there’s a lot of good things happening and a lot to be thankful for.

And I’m actually proud of myself. I’m doing this. We’re doing this.

We’re not going to stop. Papageno will prevail.

“Stiff upper lip, ol’ chap!”

That’s the British way.

The Papageno Diaries: Episode 4 “Going from Paradise to Hell.”

This was the hardest week for us. Everything was hard. Everything was difficult. And just when we decided to give ourselves a well deserved day off, two days after, we go through one of the scariest days we’ve ever had on Papageno. We nearly lose her in bad weather. When things get tough, and you’re exhausted every single day, how do you stay motivated? From YOU guys. Thank you for your love and support. We need it more than you guys could ever know. We will never let Papageno down and we will never let YOU down. LOVE YOU! Love Lizbef, Edouard and Papageno x

The Papageno Diaries: Episode 3 “Putting Papageno in the water!”

We sweated, bled and cried to get this far. Within 11 days we managed to clear her out, fix a thousand things and fair her hull with a new coat of paint, ready to take the world by storm! All we need now is some masts… But there’s still SO MUCH work to do. Engine, oil, leaks here and there and a bunch of other things that would have kept us awake at night if we weren’t so exhausted… Hope you enjoy! Love Lizbef, Edouard and Papageno x
