10 Days Left: Making Plans and Smashing the To-Do List!

“You’re getting there, Elizabeth,” I say to myself. “You’re getting there.”

I stare at the ceiling of my cabin, not wanting to move. I’m far too comfortable, but feel incredibly lazy as it’s already past 9am. I was up until 1am last night working on illustrations, the website, emails and working on a graphic design project. I drag myself out of bed and head straight to work, sorting out our to-do list, and continuing with laptop duties.

Laura has gone for some time out with her mother to a lovely hotel where they can spend time with each other and go swimming in the pool. I found it strange waking up without her. Realising that there was a silence on the boat where Laura filled it with conversation and singing.

Even Leela seemed a bit miserable without her, lying on the floor in the bathroom, staring at me in accusation.

“Another person gone,” her eyes seemed to say.

There was no way to explain that Laura would be back. And there was no way to explain that she was about to go on the biggest journey of her life to England in just 10 days.

10 days left on Papageno. How bazaar.

I spoke to Edouard yesterday. It had been a couple of days since we last spoke. We usually ask how each other is doing, how our lives are, how Leela is doing and what’s going on with the boat.

“I worry about you Lizzie,” Edouard said. “I can relax when you get to England because I’ll know you’re safe.”

I smiled at that. And then cried because I missed him so much and I knew how happy he was in France without the boat.

“I’m so happy for you,” I said, not feeling very happy but glad for him nonetheless.

However, despite the sadness and the hardship of our separation, I know the path is right for us at this moment in time to grow as separate people. I feel like in the beginning I was an acorn and now I’m some kind of wizened oak, bent and gnarled in the spine with clenched hands.

But the mission is still clear. Carry on carrying on.

My to do list has gotten smaller. I went to the marina to beg to stay longer. They said to ask the docksman on the day I was supposed to get kicked off and ask him, and that it shouldn’t be a problem.

Alrighty then.

I’ve checked out the coolant pipe and it seems sound. No worries there.

The only thing I have to do engine wise is get the correct transmission fluid. The vet is sorted- booked an appointment for the 13th to get Leela’s latest shot. I’ve got some friends who will help me move the boat when the time comes. I’m actually hoping to hold out at the marina until the rigging workshop decide they want to work on her and bring her over themselves. I know my surroundings here, I know the people here and that’s a huge comfort whilst being here solo.

But right now, I’m finding a bit of extra happiness as each day goes by.

I’m looking forwards and am even taking a silversmithing workshop when I go home. I decided to explore all of the things that I never did but wanted to. I’ll be taking a ceramics class, weaving, silversmithing, life drawing- all of these things I took sincere joy in in the past but never pursued. Well, I have the time now. I want to fill my heart with as many creative, positive and happy things as possible. I want to work on my shop and my books. I have a few very precious months to restore my spirit in England with Leela and I intend on taking advantage of them. It’s also to go towards my shop, to expand and to continue to create art through jewellery, prints and clothing to share with everyone. I’ve always wanted to work for myself and here I am. I’m just honoured that people enjoy my illustrations.

It’s what makes me happy.

Papageno and us all have come a long way. I still intend to film when I’m in England with Leela. We’re going to explore so many places together and I can’t wait to show you what I love about my homeland. It’s been wonderful knowing I’m going home too, mostly because I’m able to say yes to invites now! Laura and I have been making many plans with our dogs and I’m content to get swept up in it all to repair some of the hurt.

I’ll continue editing, writing and creating and raising money to carry on with Papageno. As I check my emails, I’ve just learned that my rigging date has been put off. They can’t do it until I am out of the country. It’s a shame but they’ve promised to capture some footage for me.

They’re a good team and I know they’ll do the best job they can. It’s been great talking to them on a regular basis. We walk Leela past their workshop all the time so when we catch the boss there, we manage to sit in his air conditioned office and talk about the project more.

Turns out when he was young he bought a sailboat not knowing anything about sailing and went across the world with it. When we told him about keeping her as original as possible, about our journey, about bringing her back from the dead and making her a restoration project, his eyes seemed to sparkle with the challenge.

“You’re like me when I was young,” he said to me with a laugh. “You have the same look in your eye!”

I smiled.

It was determination.

It was determination to see this through. And we will. We have raised £5850 towards her restoration, just shy of the £7000 target. What an incredible turn around. This time last week I was ready to through myself into the black depths of the murky ocean around the docks. When Kickstarter had taken down our campaign, I thought it was all over.

But screw that.

It’s only over when we say it is.

And “it’s over” it’s not in the Papageno Clan’s vocabulary.

Finding Balance and Happiness on Papageno

Today is a sweaty day. Laura and I are trying our best to make arrangements for everything that is functioning on Papageno.

We have to leave the Marina on the 5th of November. I also need to compile a list of what needs to be done on Papageno to the workshop who is doing our rig. They pretty much fix everything and I like the idea of keeping things simple and getting everything done under one roof with people I trust.

My list of to-do’s are as follows.

  • Masts, rigging.
  • Wiring throughout with lights in aft cabin, galley, bathroom and back cabin.
  • Safety rail replaced portside.

These are the things that I can’t do myself. I want a professional to do them so I don’t have to worry. The other things such as:

  • Fix waterpump
  • Fit automatic bilge pump
  • Repaint kitchen
  • Fix refrigerator
  • Clean and repaint all bilges
  • Repaint interior
  • Sand/Repaint wood inside
  • Fit wind turbine
  • Repaint floors
  • Have mattresses, bedding and outside cushions arranged
  • (probably about a million other things to do).

However, these can wait until I get back in January to start repairs. I’m not sure whether the major work will start while I am here or when I’m away. I’m trying to get the workshop to start work on Papageno immediately, but the 12th still stands. I’m hoping I’ll be able to see her mast completion by the day I fly back home on the 15th.

When we get kicked out of the marina on the 5th, we have to move to the boat yard around the corner. It’s 375 euros a month. There she will be safe and sound and I’m hoping one of the mechanics will live on her from the workshop (he’s looking for a place apparently) in exchange for low rent and fixing a few things around Papageno. My worry is getting Papageno to a standard where someone can comfortably live on her. That, and hoping someone will actually want to live on her. It would cover some of the yard fees for me and would be nice to know that someone is keeping an eye on her.

It sounds like a small thing today, but I’m proud of myself. I fixed the shower bilge pump and started trusting myself a bit more. Turns out I just had to dismantle it and clean out all the muck- but bloody hell, I’m proud of myself! Now I just have to stop avoiding other jobs like the automatic bilge pump.

“It’s very easy,” everyone keeps telling me.

I’m going to have to get over this fear, I think!

These are just some of the simple jobs that I will be doing. There will be more expected of me. And I want to be competent. The waterpump stopped working today. Laura and I checked the connections in the kitchen and opened the engine room to check them there. There was nothing obviously wrong with anything.

As I was hanging over the side, touching the wires, I realised that I had no idea what I was looking for.

Edouard would know what he was doing, a voice said in my head.

But he’s not here anymore, another voice replied. You need to know how to do it.

It started working again 30minutes later, so Laura and I decided to leave it to the will of the Gods, praying that maybe some of my wiggling, disconnecting and reconnecting the connections had done some good.

(I doubt it.)

I’ve been very nervous about moving the boat to the boat yard. It’s only a 20 minute journey, but I’m nervous still to do it alone. Laura will be with her mother exploring Martinique and I’m hoping that I will get my confidence back once I achieve it. I just need to overcome this fear.

However, each day has been a positive one. Laura and I have been sleeping very well and wake up to a beautiful breakfast of eggs and toast. We’ve been through a lot together and I can’t wait for us to be back in our home town to enjoy the delights of cold weather, jumpers, woolly socks and gravy soaked dinners.

We’re content.

It’s a far cry from how things were before. When Edouard had left and I didn’t know whether he was returning- I was a mess. Now I know what is what and that I am the master of my own path, I’ve felt a lot happier. When our Kickstarter was taken down, I felt so numb to everything. The warmth, hope and achievement had vanished. What else could go wrong?

But then we turned a corner.

I’ve started to focus on the future, and hope has begun to grow inside once more. I really want to share Papageno with everyone so I’m really happy to have people enjoy their holidays on her whilst I’m back in England studying more courses and earning extra funds for her continued improvement throughout 2019. I’m still happy with my two months on and four months off arrangement to move her back to Europe. The four months off gives me time to earn money in the UK for her, edit videos and to pursue the British historical adventure dream that I’ve had for a long time- sharing our expllorations with you all of course. Castles and cream teas- I’m coming for ya! And Leela? Wait until I show her those endless green hills and trees of Blighty!

Whilst I’m at home for those breaks, I want people to share in Papageno, to create memories on her with their loved ones like we have so far. And then when I return for the two months on, I hope to be experienced enough to lead the crew and learn from my fellow sailors and peers.

Like I’ve said before- the most important thing to me is balance, confidence and education. To keep this balance, the Lizbef Diaries are going to be a varied combination of land and sea next year whilst I learn how to be a good Captain to my crew, make Papageno a safe boat, and also be able have my heartfelt adventures in Britain with Leela.

Welcoming people on Papageno for a holiday is not just yet however.

Right now, Laura and I are used to her little quirks- sometimes you have to hit this to make it work, twist that a certain way for this to start, only using water after flicking a switch, using a coolbox instead of a fridge and using a fender for a pillow in the cockpit.

We are aware it may not be for everyone.

Laura and I dream and fantasise when Papageno is finally comfortable. We talk about when the bathroom is tiled, when we have a new shower head, when we can have new sheets on the beds, new mattresses instead on sleeping on the 50 year old foaming and thin camping bed. We fantasise about making her liveable, beautiful and functional. When the walls are painted. Should we paint the wood or not? What tiles for the bathroom do we want? How should we paint the floor?

But those things are luxuries right now. The priority of course is the masts and rigging. Everything else can fall into place afterwards.

The entire structure is going to change when her masts and rig is up.

I think about it each time I walk down the dock towards her, seeing her so small looking next to the other boats.

“Wait till I have my masts!” she seems to shout in protest.

Shakespeare’s line comes to mind.

“Though she be but little, she is fierce.”

Too right, Will.

I’ve been trying my best to stay focused, still achieving a task each day. I didn’t realise how much I wanted this until everything fell apart. Until we started to build everything back together. I still feel like everything is a bit up and down, but I haven’t cried in a long time, so that must be a bonus, right?

Edouard and I still talk together. He’s very happy with his life in Marseille. I’m glad for him. And whereas I feel like the waters surroundings me are story and murky at times, I’m glad that he has found steady ground.

I’m looking forward to finding that when I return to England, two weeks today. I need it so desperately, for everything to be still for a while. So, I can start making plans and see Papageno in a clearer light. Then I can enjoy Christmas and return in January to get stuck back in.

I really didn’t see my journey turning this way. I didn’t see myself walking this path solo. And I didn’t foresee that I would have so much support when everything started to crack.

But here it is. And here I am.

We are now at £4205. £2795 away from our target. My sister and I have been organising Papageno’s shop to send out the rewards to everyone who has taken part so far. Papageno’s second chance is taking affect and we’re so close.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone from my heart. I’m looking forward to you all getting your rewards and I just want to hug each and every one of you. Laura and I will be arranging a Papageno meet up in December, so at east I’ll be able to hug some of you!

Sending you all of our love, hugs and high fives as always.

Papageno’s Captain Log: Part 1 “Keep it together!”

It’s been a long time. Far too long in fact. I can feel my bones shift into position as I take a heavier weight each day. But I knew this would happen. I knew that it would have to be like this.

Keep it together, Liz, keep it together.

I feel a calm resignation every day. I don’t even panic anymore. There have been so many set backs, cancellations and delays with Papageno that I’ve learned to take it all in my stride. Or maybe it’s not even taking it in my stride. Maybe I’ve just accepted it is the way it is, or maybe Papageno has just beaten me.

I don’t know. And I suppose it doesn’t matter as long as I carry on.

There’s a strange responsibility being a captain who shouldn’t be captain. I see the surprise on people’s faces when they ask who’s in charge of Papageno and they see my hand raised.

“Haha, yeah, but really?”

“No, I really am the Captain.”

“Oh… that’s nice!”

So nice. So nice in fact that I feel like my spine is turning to chalk each day as I get up and face another day of heat, another day of organisation, another day of trying to keep it all up and rolling for my crew who I desperately love.

I have dreams, I have aspirations, and one of them is to get Papageno out there and doing what she wants to do.

My day so far:

7am: I wake up alone in the cabin because of the mosquitos. They eat Edouard alive, forcing him to sleep in the cockpit. There weren’t too many the previous night, but we were all hot. We were excited the previous night because we had just had all of our dirty laundry washed. We went to bed after a cold shower at the marina and collapsed into our freshly washed sheets. I’ve never been so thankful to find my clothes smelling clean and have them beautifully folded.

I stayed up to put the usual things away in the saloon. I’m always worried that Leela will jump on the table and devour everything in sight- I still haven’t gotten over how she ate our entire packet of bacon that we were so excited to have for breakfast the next morning. Because we have our washing, I don’t want Edouard to wake up to a mess. He’s already collapsed in the cockpit and is fast asleep, so I put everything away and make our bed, shutting the cupboard doors quickly in case the hiding mosquitos get out.

7:30am Laura makes us porridge with proper oats. We had some awful Quaker stuff the other week with mushed up oats- it doesn’t feel very English. Edouard isn’t sure how he feels about the entire “eating oats” thing, claiming it’s for horses, not people. But Laura and I are incredibly enthusiastic about it this morning so he goes for it anyway, whacking a load of jam into his bowl. Laura chooses peanut butter (bleugh) and I choose chia seeds and brown sugar.

It’s delicious.

11am Edouard goes off in the dingy with Leela to go swimming. It’s far too hot for her and she’s usually panting under the table. She’s in the playful biting stage at the moment and loves to jump at our toes when we’re least expecting it. She’s not pooping on the boat anywhere- which is a small kindness, but enjoys pooping on the dock in front of other people’s boats. Edouard has been asked to clear up after her, and after throwing a bucket of water to clean up, the poop washes inside a man’s fishing boat. After being forced to jump in and throw it out by hand, we’re all keeping a watchful eye on where she chooses to go to the toilet.

12:30am

Edouard and I go to get some supplies for lunch. The most important thing about keeping a crew together I’ve learned is keeping up morale- and that’s usually through our bellies. We’re incredibly happy if we’ve made a bowl of popcorn or have biscuits to dunk in our tea.

1:30pm Edouard makes us a salad with tomatoes, caramelised onions with a French mustard and balsamic dressing and cheese. I can barely eat all of mine because we ate a huge bag of crisps before as we were too hungry to wait. I think he doesn’t mind because he usually gets to eat my scraps.

4pm We all take a moment to relax. I go to my room for a lie down with my book whilst Edouard teaches Laura about map reading. I’ve been reading about The Great War recently and just finished The Forgotten Voices of the Somme. I devoured it and I’m now reading The Forgotten Voices of the Great War. It’s an account from soldiers from both sides, German, French and English and what they witnessed and felt. It’s been hugely humbling, and I tell myself everyday when I find it hard that I have nothing to complain about. I’m not a seventeen year old boy standing in a trench waiting to be told to go over and get shot down. I have all of my limbs, my health, I have water, food and I’m safe. I’m not at war. I should be grateful. And so, when I lie back and have their accounts echoing in my head, I feel relief coursing through me.

5pm I’m here in the office at the marina, trying to charge up our equipment. We’ve been forced to stop our usual pace of speed recently as we wait for a new head gasket for Papageno. I’m not sure how much it’s going to be or how much the mechanic is going to be, so I’m making sure to raise funds by doing something that gives me peace- painting.

And that is my day so far. I’m looking forward to going back to the boat and getting out my watercolours and I know Edouard is keen for me to do that as well. It’s been hard over the past few months and I barely recognise myself. But I’ve reached the big 30 now and I’m determined to carry on with renewed enthusiasm and vigour. My crew relies on me. I didn’t realise how heavy that would feel. To always be able to keep it together to not affect anyone. I want a happy and safe crew. I want everyone to have a positive experience out of this.

But at the moment I know it’s been difficult. It’s been hard, but we’re all trying. We’ll be leaving St Kitts soon and will be heading to Monserrat and then Guadeloupe for a week. After that? Martinique for the serious repairs. Not to mention my parents are coming over to see me in September in St Lucia.

So, there’s a lot of good things happening and a lot to be thankful for.

And I’m actually proud of myself. I’m doing this. We’re doing this.

We’re not going to stop. Papageno will prevail.

“Stiff upper lip, ol’ chap!”

That’s the British way.
