SV Papageno looking for new Captain!

I’ve got some news.

I’m selling Papageno.

There, I said it!

I’ve had some amazing opportunities come my way since being back in the UK, and it’s time to realise a few dreams of mine. So here they are-

Writing Books-

I’ve been fighting and working towards a writing career all of my life. My world revolves around books and creating them. They are my deepest passion. I have now been given an opportunity to dedicate myself to some really exciting projects, and now is the time to do that.

Canal Cruising-

I’ve been saying for nearly a year now as well of how I want to pursue river cruising. It’s time to take the leap! I am selling Papageno to buy a canal boat in the UK where Leela and I can be together, family can be close and to be able to travel Britain’s waterways. I have already seen several boats and I’m ready to make that decision.

Leela and family-

Finalising the choice is Leela and my family. I adopted Leela with the promise that I would give her the best life possible. Leela is happy in England and it would be unfair to uproot her. She loves my family, she can run, play and the weather is far kinder to a long-haired dog. I don’t want to be apart from her any more on trips. She comes first. For the first time, I have been developing an actual relationship with my nephew. He’s six. I’ve been going back and forth for the past three years, and now since being back since May, we have bonded, and I don’t want to be parted from him either. I see my family around twice a week. And that feels so special.

Beautiful Britain-

I deeply love this country and haven’t explored it as much as I would have liked. I’m intending on travelling the waterways as far as I can go by canal boat with Leela, exploring the countryside and the historical places that I’ve been obsessed about for a long time. I’ve been travelling a lot now searching for something. Always trying to be in the right place at the right time for that something. For the first time in a long time, I feel like that place is simply all about being happy. And this choice makes me that.

I’ve been feeling like this for a long time. I know I could go back in the new year and finish Papageno. But I think it’s time to pass her onto someone with more time and dedication. She has come so far and is so close to competition- we both deserve a fresh start.

It’s the right choice for me to remain in the UK and to dedicate myself to this author life with Leela, whilst creating a home for us on the waterways. We visited a boat yesterday and we will be going back tomorrow to have a further inspection.

I want to do what makes me happy. And knowing Papageno is going to someone who has that passion to take her on adventures would make me so happy. Papageno has come SO FAR. I’m so proud of her and what we have accomplished. We brought her from the brink and created an amazing adventure. I made so many lifelong friends, and I’m grateful for every experience she taught me.

I’m really happy about this decision for mine and Leela’s adventure. It’s a whole new world of boating, but at least I already have some experience. I’m going to be getting down and dirty with a semi project, but at least this time I’ll be able to speak the language, be 30mins away form my apartment, have family and friends to help, and that beautiful English weather. Oh! And the tea. Can’t forget the tea.

This decision kind of outlines on the reason why I’ve been a lot quieter on social media. I wanted to process this decision and do what is right for Leela and I. We are so EXCITED for the future. And we are excited for whoever takes the plunge on their adventure with Papageno.

So, if you would like to make an offer on Papageno, to become her new Captain, and want to make her your home on the ocean, contact me.

Going Further

So, you want to do it. You want to go for it. You want to walk your path. Maybe you’ve always known, or maybe you’ve just discovered this urge.

Does it keep you awake? Does it scratch inside your mind?
Me too.

I think I knew from a very early age I wanted to be in charge of my destiny. I wanted to dictate what I was going to spend the years of my life doing- not someone else.
When I was a child, there had never been any doubt that I would make it. Of course, I would travel, write and paint. It was all I ever wanted to do. I grew up reading Lord of the Rings and C.S Lewis and hundreds of other fantastical books.

“You’ll never make it as a writer,” my family would tell me.

Won’t I?

I remember being determined and defiant with those words, echoing them over and over in my mind as I set upon a path of living out my ambition and proving them all wrong. I remember having a guidance counselor come into our school and picking out the profession best suited for us.

Do you know what I got?

A vicar.

There I was after a ten-minute discussion and that was the profession that was deemed more appropriate for me. I think I was eleven years old, and I realised with a shock how much of a sham it all was. How could someone else tell me what I was supposed to do?
And although I’m nowhere near a house of God, I’d like to think that I can help lead and give guidance to you when and if you need it. I was a teenager when I decided I wanted to become an English teacher. Mostly because my school was so bad that I was sure I could do a better job than my English teacher. And also because it was the closest career I could think of to writing.
I went to college to study a Diploma in Fine Art and then graduated from University with a 2:1 in Creative Writing and became an English Lecturer at a college. And you know what?
I hated it.

I loved the students but I hated that their worth was valued on a points system. So, I quit and gave it all up, sure that I would make it one day.
The pride my family had for their English Lecturer daughter fell. I was a waitress again. I had “lost my way.”

But I didn’t feel lost. I was writing more than ever, going from job to job, quitting when I hated it and moving onto the next adventure, still writing and then I began to paint again.
I knew I would make it. Because there was no choice. There was no alternative. There was no going back.

It was listening to an Alan Watts talk that spurred me on even further. Asking the listener what would they like to do with their life?

And that is what this new EarleWrites Project is going to be about.

What about Papageno? I hear you say. Well, to be a good Captain, I need to earn more money to complete her restoration. That means making EarleWrites a success. Going forwards. Fighting hard. I think it’s about time I invested some time and energy into myself until I return this year with a new crew.

And as we’re on this journey together, I’m going to sharing with you guys some of the tricks I’ve learned.

What do YOU want to do with your life? Where do YOU want to go? What do YOU want to achieve?
Whether you want to start your own Creative Business, need to get over negative family members or friends, are looking for courage in the shadows of doubt- I’m here for you.
I’ll be covering things such as:

-Starting Out- What do I need to do?

-Travelling and Working on the Go

-Buying a Boat for the First Time

-Writing Books, Approaching Agents, Social Media and Going it Alone as an Indie Author.

-Illustration and how to market your Business

-How to use Social Media to your advantage with nearly every business
-Self Belief and Going Forwards

If you have any other subjects that you would like me to cover- let me know! I love hearing your suggestions and comments!

While doing these podcasts, I’ll also be focusing on YOUR self-worth, confidence, and self-belief. I’ll be making sure that you know that it’s ok to not be ok. It’s ok to have a day off. It’s ok to be HUMAN while you’re doing all of this. We’re going to figure this out together.
LET’S BEGIN.

Earle and Leela’s Move in Day!

Well tomorrow is the big day.

I become a proper adult and start living in my own home. I’m renting, but you know what I mean. The apartment is set inside this big building above! It used to be a house but got separated into apartments. Mine is at the very top! I’m going to get fit walking up 4 flights of stairs I think!

I’ve been working hard on my paintings and it’s been a relief to be in an environment where I can find a bit of peace. Tomorrow comes with a lot of changes and I’ve never been very good with that.

I just want to get settled.

As you know I’ve been living with my mate Steve and I’m scared to leave. There’s a comfort in these four walls. My friends come and go all of the time. I have my bedroom here, the comfiest bed, I have my space on the sofa, my blanket and the side switch that makes the seat pop out.

But there’s always a time to step out of your comfort zone.

And that’s tomorrow.

I’ve realised a few things whilst I’ve been here. I need to make even more changes. I’m going to be kind to myself and accept the fact that I’ve been adjusting to life back in England.

I know it’s been a while, but sometimes I still think of Edouard. Of course I do. It’s natural. Sometimes I wish I could go back and just relive that first day in Paris together over and over. But that’s a dream and I need to wake up from it. I need to preoccupy my mind. I’ve been looking for distractions a lot recently, and I’ve been waking up with a sore head on more than one occasion. But it’s time to start pouring my energy into constructive ways.

Painting.

Running.

Going to the gym.

Meeting family.

In October I wrote nearly every day. It was a great comfort- a cheap form of therapy as I poured my heart out to the world. Now it’s pretty much December, I’m ready to start writing again properly. I’ve been dying the past year to throw myself back into my Maddox Black series. It’s been a year since I wrote anything on it, and the last time I wrote a piece of fiction was in June this year about a girl who went back in time to 1922 (time travel is a fantasy of mine.) It’s time to get a schedule. Become organised. Motivated.

I really want to develop something where Papageno can give back. I think we’re ready to start building something. But I don’t know in which direction. So, if you have any organisations that are close to your heart, please let me know. I want to be a part of animal conservation efforts, humanitarian efforts and ocean preservation efforts. All of these ideas, intentions and I’m planning on 2019 to be a big year for us.

All I know is that I want Papageno to be independent and to do all she can to make a difference.

One of the reasons why Edouard was upset on the boat was because he felt that we weren’t involved in helping the community. He was a part of such amazing solidarity projects back in France that it went against his principles to simply do nothing.

“We have to get established first,” I would tell him. “We’re trying to build a base so we can make a bigger difference.”

But now he is making his own difference.

And it’s time I did too.

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. Coming up with ideas and talking with likeminded people. About possibly taking groups of people out to places to build up schools or assist with medical supplies. Or it could be arranging teams of people to do beach clear ups or fundraising for children afflicted by life altering illnesses. And then there’s homelessness.

So many different things I feel for and it’s time now to create the start of something. I knew Papageno would always do something to help. That was my promise.

I was hoping to develop a range of products to specifically raise funds for these intentions or arrange fundraisers. But I know things take time, planning and good people.

So I’ll be setting up my shop in my new flat with my mum and sister and we’re going to be sitting down and figuring out how we can make EarleWrites a success so we can make an actual difference in the world. The Papageno Project has to be about something. It has to MEAN something.

I went to bed last night, wondering what I wanted from life.

What I wanted to achieve.

And that was all I could think about as my head touched the pillow. About how I could try and make a difference.

About how excited I was to wake up and continue making new items by hand, painting, working with ceramics, answering emails about your family portrait commissions.

Sometimes I get a longing for the place I’m supposed to be. I have no idea where that is yet. All I know is that I have to carry on doing my best, carry on doing what is best for me and Leela and keep Papageno alive.

I still have a while to go in some self healing, but I hope my new home will become a haven for me. A place to be safe, secure and to encourage more self love for myself.

I can’t wait to show you the first episode of The British Diaries, so I thank you for being patient with me as I create it and have another move in my life.

10 Days Left: Making Plans and Smashing the To-Do List!

“You’re getting there, Elizabeth,” I say to myself. “You’re getting there.”

I stare at the ceiling of my cabin, not wanting to move. I’m far too comfortable, but feel incredibly lazy as it’s already past 9am. I was up until 1am last night working on illustrations, the website, emails and working on a graphic design project. I drag myself out of bed and head straight to work, sorting out our to-do list, and continuing with laptop duties.

Laura has gone for some time out with her mother to a lovely hotel where they can spend time with each other and go swimming in the pool. I found it strange waking up without her. Realising that there was a silence on the boat where Laura filled it with conversation and singing.

Even Leela seemed a bit miserable without her, lying on the floor in the bathroom, staring at me in accusation.

“Another person gone,” her eyes seemed to say.

There was no way to explain that Laura would be back. And there was no way to explain that she was about to go on the biggest journey of her life to England in just 10 days.

10 days left on Papageno. How bazaar.

I spoke to Edouard yesterday. It had been a couple of days since we last spoke. We usually ask how each other is doing, how our lives are, how Leela is doing and what’s going on with the boat.

“I worry about you Lizzie,” Edouard said. “I can relax when you get to England because I’ll know you’re safe.”

I smiled at that. And then cried because I missed him so much and I knew how happy he was in France without the boat.

“I’m so happy for you,” I said, not feeling very happy but glad for him nonetheless.

However, despite the sadness and the hardship of our separation, I know the path is right for us at this moment in time to grow as separate people. I feel like in the beginning I was an acorn and now I’m some kind of wizened oak, bent and gnarled in the spine with clenched hands.

But the mission is still clear. Carry on carrying on.

My to do list has gotten smaller. I went to the marina to beg to stay longer. They said to ask the docksman on the day I was supposed to get kicked off and ask him, and that it shouldn’t be a problem.

Alrighty then.

I’ve checked out the coolant pipe and it seems sound. No worries there.

The only thing I have to do engine wise is get the correct transmission fluid. The vet is sorted- booked an appointment for the 13th to get Leela’s latest shot. I’ve got some friends who will help me move the boat when the time comes. I’m actually hoping to hold out at the marina until the rigging workshop decide they want to work on her and bring her over themselves. I know my surroundings here, I know the people here and that’s a huge comfort whilst being here solo.

But right now, I’m finding a bit of extra happiness as each day goes by.

I’m looking forwards and am even taking a silversmithing workshop when I go home. I decided to explore all of the things that I never did but wanted to. I’ll be taking a ceramics class, weaving, silversmithing, life drawing- all of these things I took sincere joy in in the past but never pursued. Well, I have the time now. I want to fill my heart with as many creative, positive and happy things as possible. I want to work on my shop and my books. I have a few very precious months to restore my spirit in England with Leela and I intend on taking advantage of them. It’s also to go towards my shop, to expand and to continue to create art through jewellery, prints and clothing to share with everyone. I’ve always wanted to work for myself and here I am. I’m just honoured that people enjoy my illustrations.

It’s what makes me happy.

Papageno and us all have come a long way. I still intend to film when I’m in England with Leela. We’re going to explore so many places together and I can’t wait to show you what I love about my homeland. It’s been wonderful knowing I’m going home too, mostly because I’m able to say yes to invites now! Laura and I have been making many plans with our dogs and I’m content to get swept up in it all to repair some of the hurt.

I’ll continue editing, writing and creating and raising money to carry on with Papageno. As I check my emails, I’ve just learned that my rigging date has been put off. They can’t do it until I am out of the country. It’s a shame but they’ve promised to capture some footage for me.

They’re a good team and I know they’ll do the best job they can. It’s been great talking to them on a regular basis. We walk Leela past their workshop all the time so when we catch the boss there, we manage to sit in his air conditioned office and talk about the project more.

Turns out when he was young he bought a sailboat not knowing anything about sailing and went across the world with it. When we told him about keeping her as original as possible, about our journey, about bringing her back from the dead and making her a restoration project, his eyes seemed to sparkle with the challenge.

“You’re like me when I was young,” he said to me with a laugh. “You have the same look in your eye!”

I smiled.

It was determination.

It was determination to see this through. And we will. We have raised £5850 towards her restoration, just shy of the £7000 target. What an incredible turn around. This time last week I was ready to through myself into the black depths of the murky ocean around the docks. When Kickstarter had taken down our campaign, I thought it was all over.

But screw that.

It’s only over when we say it is.

And “it’s over” it’s not in the Papageno Clan’s vocabulary.
